Although my nights have been full of staying in and being cozy I have actually been super productive. Our new space at work is really coming together, it looks great. We met with money people last week and they were pretty impressed by the place. I think we are going to be able to double our equipment and services therefore being able to hire twice the amount of kids. success!
Same week as I was preparing for the big work meeting I applied to grad school. I think they might just let me in. I still need to figure out how I'm going to pay for it.

One of my inspirations for my day job is a similar social entrepreneurship in Los Angeles ran by Gregory Boyle called Homeboy Industries. Homeboy has a screenprinting & embroidery shop, bakery, as well as a Homegirl cafe and catering. The demographic they serve and employ are ex-gang members (our population is homeless youth) and I LOVE their slogan 'Jobs not Jails'. Boyle recently put out a book that I have begun to read and it is fuel to the fire of expanding my program so that we as well can positively effect more youth. Hire more youth so that they can earn safe money to help them get off the streets. Boyle is faith based which we are not and honestly people pushing faith tend to turn me off but there is a bigger message that I thankfully absorbed.

so much has changed in one year. I moved my home 3 times, my work 1 time. In the last month I have thrown my back out, was sick in bed 3 out of the 4 weekends. Its been a rough year and a month that I am super happy to wave good bye to. This new year is going to be a good one. I know it. Straight off the bat good year. Lots of new goals, to be later recorded.
I hope that everyone is given live energy to pursue their dreams and be really happy.

choco pumpkin pie

Last year thanksgiving was the funnest and although I would love to have a repeat a lot changes in a year. Staying home this year I am able to cook/bake in my own kitchen. So, it started with my 3rd pie ever made. Hopefully I retained what I learned in the past two attempts and this one will be much better. Especially since its for the bf's family. No pressure. So, I used a few different recipes and combined them into one.
The crust:
1.5 cups of Gingersnap cookies
6 tps of butter
and sugar (which made things a little too sugary so I would leave this out)
fill pie pan and bake at 450 for 10min. then let cool.

The filing:
pretty standard pumpkin pie filling
vanilla
cloves
nutmeg
cinnamon
2 eggs
1 cup of heavy cream
pumpkin
stirred well together
add to pie pan and crust.
bake at 350 for 50 min or until knife entered into middle comes out clean.
I put this in the fridge over night.

Chocolate layer:
Full bag of chocolate chips
1/2 milk
put into sauce pan and keep mixing until all melted then pour over pumpkin. yummy!! This taste better served cold. And oh my goodness this was delicious!!

I feel very naive admitting that I didn't understand what this word meant...for a long time.

People around me used it and I understood the context but anyhow. I am so deeply touched and admire anyone involved in the Occupy movement. I feel I am doing my part working in social services, no less providing unemployable people (for various reasons) job training and cash well earned for their work. But the ones that are in parks peacefully protesting and sustaining all sorts of abuse from police and the environment, those people are daily in my thoughts. How brave they are. Yes, the media of course is playing them out to be unfocused and lazy but that is what the media does and has historically done. My Mother admitted to me that for the longest time she was afraid of Asian people. (roll of eyes) She feed into the media concerning Pearl Harbor and believed that Asians were evil and dangerous. Similarly, how we are 'supposed' to believe that anyone with a middle eastern name and wears a turban are just as dangerous. Stupid.

Today I have been trying to really relax, get caught up around the house and resist any urge to leave and go thrift shopping. So, after researching some easy techniques for a newbie bread baker I landed on: Beer Bread. Not only super easy, (no leaving dough to sit for 12 hours, then another 4 hours...) but add some hemp hearts, rosemary and fancy farm butter with ShockTop Belgian White beer and I think I have just successfully made my first loaf :) I followed this recipe. Next I'm going to try Jalapeno and Pepper Jack scones. Maybe even today. Mmmmm carbs.

I had to say goodbye to the mercedes. A nice man picked her up and talked grand things of treating her well. I missed dumpster diving and well its nice to have something reliable too. My first haul was a vintage bike for the man found on craigslist. Then that prompted a late evening visit to savers to find more cheap big stuff to throw in the back. I scored a highschool size student desk from the 70s, cha ching.
I love my truck.

I am vacation dreaming... I need to make San Francisco happen, it has been many years and I can hear it calling my name for a recharge. I found this amazing site through this cute couple.
It appears that hotels are the next microwave. People don't still those, do they?
Typing in SF I see all sorts of cool unique places/houses/treehouses/trailors/ect. to stay in. You can even rent a room in one of the painted ladies that has a jacuzzi spa and steam room.

I have found myself really staring at trees lately. Looking at all the different beautiful types, I'm embarrassed to say that I had not paid any attention to them before. Well when I was a little I would smell the trees in the forest when we went camping. A lot of them smelled like neopalitan icecream. Well, aps electric company is offering free shade trees to people who attend an hour and 1/2 workshop about the best placement of your new tree and how to take care of it. They have 8 different types of trees available, and by attending the workshop you get 2 free trees and if your house was built before 1980 you get an extra tree.

Right now our back and front yard is mostly dirt, a little fake grass and weird big aquarium rocks. So free trees, hell yes! In November I heard you can order fruit tress (I want an apple one) for $30 and in January its delivered ready to be planted. I hope to turn our new house into a fun big overgrown garden yard.

As I am eating my yummy nachos and tostado at work I am reveling in gratitude.
I am so grateful for the following:

-Friends feeding us while we are in transition and the house is a mess from moving
-Eating with friends
-Having a day off this week
-Eating super good food at work (steaks yesterday and mexican fiesta today)
(it appears that good food makes me really happy and to have that for a few days in a row makes me want to jump up and down in excitement)
-Having a sweet man help me pack and move all my stuff into OUR house
-Having the strength to write a letter to someone that I have been afraid of for a long time, telling them how I feel about them
-Michelle letting me borrow her car, which has helped me move stuff into the new house, not have to bike or walk in the 120 degree heat, experience ac while driving in the hot summer and be super comfortable (what was I thinking...pretty project car is not a realistic daily driver. lesson learned.)
-Having super amazing friends call to check in on me and patiently wait for me to return their phone calls

I'm a little overwhelmed with moving, trying to fix & sell my car, looking to buy a newer car once my old one sells, the cost of moving, the physical endurance of moving during the hottest time of summer...
But, I have been paying attention to all the loving helping hands and plates that been put before me making anything that is overwhelming so much easier and I am so so so grateful.

This video was shot between 6:30PM-7:30PM. Each frame is a 5 second exposure, so the 24 seconds of video equates to one hour of real time. The winds were out of the east on this night, so PHX was initially landing planes out of the west. This is why you see the sunset in the background. After 7:30PM, the winds died down and PHX resumed their normal flight path of landing planes from the east. I stopped the time lapse after this 7:30PM transition.

and I'm moving again. My Mom says that instead of cleaning that I move. Which isn't totally true but this is probably the 26th time of moving I counted. And each time I enjoy it less and less. But each place does get better and better.

when I was younger I used to teach class to my stuffed animals. I would close my bedroom door and teach, I wish I remembered exactly what I taught. But even then I remembered thinking it was weird but I liked to do it. anyhow, seeing these desks on craigslist (they are priced really cheap) brought back that memory and made me think how cool it would be to have this set.

first harvest & birds nest

This nest is round and enclosed except for a little circle window that the tiniest prettiest bird goes in and out of. I wanted to get a closer picture but I remembered hearing something about human scent and mama birds not returning to their nest. And check out my first harvest. Okra, can you believe it. I had never seen that grow before. Zucchini, jalapenos and cucumber coming in. The pumpkin vine looks pretty amazing, I'm looking forward to that so I can make pies or a hundred other things that are so good pumpkin.

I finally upgraded my phone. I have spent a bit of time trying to figure out all the whistles but I also managed to fit in some much need sewing time as well. My mending box is finally empty and I feel like I have a new wardrobe. Such a good feeling. Anyhow since the man is out of town visiting family here is my little man in instagrams.

redecorate the house (now that I'm more settled in, I need to make things more functional)
